How do I get my first remote job?

By Leda Dakou

Many people who want to adopt the digital nomad lifestyle and work remotely keep asking us that question.

Let’s see some basic steps you need to take to achieve your goal:

  • Keep learning

Improving your skills is the first important step towards finding the ideal remote job or any job! Attend webinars, take online courses, read newsletters and articles concerning the market you are interested in, and stay updated with industry and technology trends.

  • Network, network, network!

Networking is one of the most powerful tools for finding remote positions or freelance tasks to build your career. Make connections with other remote workers, freelancers, or professionals in general who may have information about companies seeking remote employees.

Networking can also help you stay updated on current trends and learn more about skills in high demand for remote work positions, allowing you to tailor your own skills and experiences to meet these needs.

  • Follow companies you’re interested in on social media

If there are companies you’d like to work for, follow them on social media or sign up for their newsletters, it is easier to be aware of any openings of remote job positions at these companies.

  • Identify your skills:

Start by making an overall assessment of your skills and experiences. Identify your strengths, weaknesses, and areas where you excel to help you find a remote job that aligns with your abilities and improve your skills in order to increase the possibilities of finding a perfect position.

  • Update your resume and LinkedIn profile:

Keep your resume and LinkedIn profile updated to highlight your remote work experience or relevant skills and knowledge you may have acquired recently.

  • Research remote job opportunities:

There are many websites where you can find remote job opportunities, such as FlexJobs, Remote.co, and Indeed. Look for positions matching your skills and interests as well as your expectations.

  • Make the most of your application:

Once you find a job opening you are interested in, thoroughly review the job description and understand the requirements. To apply properly you need to tailor your application materials to the specific position and company you’re applying to. Customize your cover letter and resume to highlight how your skills and experiences make you a strong candidate for the specific job.

  • Ace the interview:

If you get called in for an interview, prepare thoroughly. Research the company and practice common interview questions. Make sure you have a reliable internet connection and a quiet space for conducting the interview.

  • Follow-up after the interview:

If you don’t hear back after applying, follow up with the employer to show serious interest and enthusiasm for the position. If you receive a rejection, ask for their feedback so you will be able to improve for future job applications.
